VAT math made clear

The same formula works whether you add VAT to a net price or separate it from a gross price.

Adding VAT

Gross price = net price × (1 + VAT rate)

€1,000 × 1.255 = €1,255

Extracting VAT

Net price = gross price ÷ (1 + VAT rate)

€1,255 ÷ 1.255 = €1,000

Frequently Asked Questions

To add VAT to a net price, multiply by 1 + the VAT rate. For the standard 25.5% rate, multiply the net amount by 1.255. To extract VAT from a gross price that already includes it, divide by 1 + the VAT rate. The difference is the VAT amount.

The general rate is 25.5%. The reduced 13.5% rate applies to selected categories such as food, restaurant services, books, accommodation and passenger transport. A 10% rate is still used for limited product groups, and 0% applies to exports and certain qualifying sales. Always check the current scope from vero.fi.

When you invoice through bisse.fi, the service remits the VAT charged on your invoices to the Finnish Tax Administration. Your job is to choose the correct VAT rate and account for VAT in your pricing. If you operate under your own Business ID, follow the €20,000 small-scale activity threshold and registration rules from vero.fi.

The calculator is configured with current Finnish VAT rates. The math is universal, but the rates shown apply specifically to Finland.

Common uses include setting an invoice price, checking the VAT share of a purchase price, and splitting a price into taxable and VAT components for bookkeeping.
